Special Project
As part of the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale 2025, curated by Carlo Ratti, the outdoor terrace of the Gran Caffè Quadri hosts the special project by Studio Teresa Sapey + Partners and curator Aaron Betsky. The intervention marks an unprecedented moment in the history of the Biennale, as it is the first special project to step outside the traditional Biennale venues and be hosted directly in Piazza San Marco, without interrupting the venue's regular service. The project, inspired by the historic coffee trade routes and their influence on the Serenissima, is intertwined with the 250th anniversary of the Gran Caffè Quadri, opened in 1775 by Giorgio Quadri, which the Alajmo Group celebrates with a menu where the special blend, created exclusively by the Laboratorio di Torrefazione Giamaica Caffè, takes centre stage in a series of original preparations.

Conceived not only for Biennale visitors and tourists but also for Venetians themselves, the intervention transforms the outdoor space of the Gran Caffè Quadri through additions that amplify the historical and cultural significance of this place. The aim is to highlight the multiculturalism, the rich historical diversity of the lagoon city and the crucial role that coffee has played in fostering the exchange and integration of different cultures, acting as a catalyst for conversations and a tool capable of bringing people together.
